My husband and I bought our first home in 1995. We were referred to Nancy Walker through a colleague and friend at my work. One day, while riding his bike through Richfield, my husband, Darrin, spotted a “For Sale by Owner” sign in front of 7337 Clinton Avenue South in Richfield, MN. We called Nancy, and she immediately jumped into action. Before long, we were closing on our very first home.
We were newly married, just starting out, and far from financially comfortable. That little story and a half home cost $102,000, and we cherished every bit of it during the 12 years we lived there. I still remember walking in on closing day—how the seller had cleaned the home to perfection and even left us notes and cleaning supplies, proudly sharing how she cared for it.
Those years on Clinton Avenue were full of life. We welcomed two babies, remodeled and made the home our own, and built an incredible community of neighbors. We organized block parties, shared meals, and joked that we lived “dorm style” with our across the street friends because our kids were the same ages and we were together so often. We even built a swing set on a neighbor’s extra lot, which became a neighborhood gathering place. Our neighbor, Emily Day, would welcome the neighborhood children if they came to say hello with a jolly rancher or the younger ones would get a marshmallow. The joy of owning that first home was unforgettable—it will always be my favorite.
Today, I see that same joy reflected in so many of our clients as they close on their first homes. It’s a gift to visit later and see what they’ve created and how much pride they take in their spaces. I never imagined I’d become a real estate agent back in 1995, but I’m so grateful I did. This work has been meaningful, fulfilling, and connected to the very heart of people’s lives and I reflect often on how I get to be a small part of that journey.
Home truly is where life’s heartbeat is.
Spring is in the air!
